Ottawa is home to thousands of Tamils who work, study and contribute towards the richness of our great city. The Tamil community in Ottawa has grown over the past decades and currently includes a great number of entrepreneurs, professionals and a large contingent of students attending local schools, colleges and universities.
The month of January is important to Tamils for several reasons. The first month of the Tamil calendar falls in the middle of January. This coincides with Thai Pongal which is Tamils' equivalent of Thanksgiving.

January 14: Pongal ‘o Pongal!
 Thai Pongal is celebrated on the first day of the month Thai of the Tamil calendar. This year, the Thai Pongal Day is celebrated on Tuesday, January 14, 2014 around the world. National Capital Region Tamil Association (NCRTA) would like to wish all its members, their family and dear ones, and the Thamizh community of Ottawa a very happy and joyous Pongal. As you joyfully celebrate the festival of Pongal, we wish this festival brings good luck and prosperity and hope that it will fill your days ahead with lots of happiness.
His Worship the Mayor of Ottawa has very kindly sent the Thamizh community of Ottawa his warmest Pongal greetings. In his message, he has mentioned that Thai Pongal and Thamizh Heritage month celebrations are a testament to the Ottawa Thamizh community's important contribution to our city's vibrant cultural mosaic. Thamizh Organizations of Ottawa would like to invite you, your family & friends to OTTAWA THAMIZH HERITAGE MONTH SHOWCASE to be held at the Walter Baker Centre, 2nd Floor, Nepean from 1:00 PM to 6:00 PM on this Saturday, January 18, 2014.
